Indian Festivals: India is a land of festivals and fairs. Every day of the year there is a festival celebrated in some part of the country. Some festivals welcome the seasons of the year, the harvest, the rains, or the full moon. Others celebrate religious occasions, the birthdays of divine beings, saints, and gurus (revered teachers), or the advent of the new year. A number of these festivals are common to most parts of India.
Diwali or Deepavali: The Festival of Lights, is one of the most colorful occasions in India. Celebrated in October-November, this festival spans three days. Diwali is celebrated with merriment and lights of various kinds. It marks the advent of winter. Prayers are said to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth.
The origin of this festival can be traced to the Hindu mythologies.
Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular of Hindu festivals. This is the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It is the day most sacred to Lord Ganesha.
